This scheme releases an old building from various "accretions" that have been added over the years. A new built strip besides the existing house creates space for a kitchen and a dining area, which cuts under the building and connects into the existing living space. The design exploits the level change between the ground floor living area and the garden. The roof of the extension is held away from the old building by an L shaped horizontal roof light, that defines the boundary between old and new.
